Mammal diversity and human impacts in Portobelo National Park, Colon Biological Corridor, Panama
Keywords:

We carried out the study within the Portobelo National Park and a section of the Chagres National Park, both part of the Colón Biological Corridor. To obtain information about the diversity and mammal communities in the study area, we estimated their relative abundance, habitat use, and propose the establishment of stations for long-term monitoring based in an analysis of 25 camera trap stations distributed in two transects. We estimated the Shannon-Wiener (H’), Simpson (D), and Inverse Simpson (1-D) diversity indices using the Biodiversity R package. For Beta diversity, we used the Vegan package to calculate the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index. We obtained 556 records, belonging to eight orders, 11 families, and 22 species. The dominant species were Dasyprocta punctata, with 180 records, and Syntheosciurus granatensis, with 65; the rare species were Philander melanurus and Cebus capucinus, with only one record each. The transects had a medium to high diversity, with statistically significant differences between them. With the results we raise some existing problems between humans and some species that we documented. We also highlight the importance of the presence of some indicator species of a healthy ecosystem that should be maintained.
