This species of histricomorphic rodent is little known in South America and one of the rarest among porcupines. Coendou ichillus has been found in nine localities in the Amazon regions of Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. This record adds new information regarding the geographical range of this species and confirms its presence in the Cordillera del Cóndor.
